I like their take but I have to admit that I love the idea of picking out my own handmade Happy Hanky and looking for a vintage brooch to clip in the middle! I know I’m partial to my own line but, my frugal ladies, one Louis Vuitton handkerchief bracelet costs $125 and a Happy Hanky handkerchief bracelet costs $15! Mad Men FashionTuesday, November 16th, 2010It’s no secret that I’m a huge Mad Men fan so needless to say I was super excited when Kara Birkenstock, TV host and owner of YourGalKara, mentioned  Happy Hanky handkerchiefs as one of the retro-chic fashion items that are quintessential of Mad Men style. Kara can be heard on the Pete & Brenda radio show outside Atlanta, GA and it can be seen on her blog  http://yourgalkara.com/. Check out some of the other items that she recommends as well…Since I already have a handkerchief I think I will be buying one of those compacts! Handkerchief EtiquetteThursday, November 11th, 2010Believe it or not there are actual rules to handkerchief usage. Follow these simple rules so you are not guilty of a hanky faux pas! 1. First, always start the day with a clean, ironed and neatly folded handkerchief. After the handkerchief is used, it is acceptable to stuff the handkerchief back into a handbag or pocket without being folded. 2. Cover your mouth and nose with your handkerchief when you sneeze. If you really want to be proper, give your handkerchief a little shake before bringing it up to your face. 3. It is extremely chivalrous for a man to offer a lady his handkerchief, however he should only do so when the handkerchief is clean and unused. Handkerchiefs As A Table-RunnerWednesday, November 10th, 2010I love getting hanky inspiration from all over and when I saw this napkin table-runner idea I immediately thought of handkerchiefs. I think it would be so lovely to use different handkerchiefs to create a table runner. Use one handkerchief under a cake plate when your serving an apple streussel to guests. And why stop at a table-runner? Why not swap out doilies for handkerchiefs? A hanky would look great under a vinatge lamp on a tiny nightstand. Why Are Handkerchiefs Square?Tuesday, November 9th, 2010When I was a child I asked my mom why a bellybutton wasn’t called a bellysnap so why would I not wonder why handkerchiefs were square?! So for the curious kids like me out there I thought I would give a short history on how the handkerchief got its shape. Handkerchiefs have been around since the early 16th century when they went from being hidden in pockets to becoming a true fashion accessory. Historians (and Fashionencyclopedia.com) say that handkerchiefs got their shape after Marie Antoinette decided that the handkerchief should be square to make it more aesthetically pleasing. She was tired of all the different handkerchief shapes that were being made; rectangle, oval, round. King Louis XVI published a decree ordering the length of the handkerchief to be equal to its width and the handkerchief has been square ever since! How to Care For Your HankiesMonday, November 8th, 2010I often receive inquiries from customers on how to care for their hanky collection. Here is what I recommend for washing your new and vintage handkerchiefs: 1. Hand-wash your handkerchiefs in warm water and a gentle detergent. 2. Hang the handkerchiefs and allow them to air-dry or tumble in dryer on warm setting. 3. If you are storing your hankies, line a plastic air-tight storage container with acid-free tissue paper and roll each hanky in the tissue paper. Store the container in a cool, dry closet and make sure they are out of direct sunlight which may deteriorate the fabric. |
