Handkerchief Sachets

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

If you’re a handkerchief lover like me, you probably have piles of vintage hankies from your mothers and grandmothers. There are so many fun little things that I’ve seen created using vintage hankies. These handkerchief sachets are defintely one of the cuter and easier ways to make use of your hankies. They make a great gift too!

From Skip to My Lou, below are simple directions on how to create your own handkerchief sachets:

1. Take one handkerchief and lay it out flat.

2. Fold the handkerchief in half and then half again. Line up all edges and press.

3. Machine stitch around the handkerchief about a half inch from the edge (on larger hankies I sewed 1 inch from the edge). Leave a one inch opening on a side that can be filled.

4. Fill handkerchief with dried lavender.

5. Close opening by finishing stitching line. The stitching line could also be embellished with hand embroidery.

The Pocket Handkerchief

Saturday, September 25th, 2010

Because I am known as the handkerchief connesuir among my friends and family I am often asked at weddings and other events how to properly fold a man’s pocket handkerchief, also known as the pocket square.  The pocket square is a direct descendant of the handkerchief . The early 19th century saw this fashion statement as a sign of wealth, status, taste and creativity. Now the pocket handkerchief is in the midst of a resurgence due to the popularity of shows like Mad Men and the trend for men to “look dapper”, a la Don Draper.

Practice folding a man’s handkerchief by following the simple instructions on A Tailored Suit’s website (I couldn’t explain it better myself and they have helpful little pictures!)  http://www.atailoredsuit.com/mens-pocket-squares-folding(a).html

The Handkerchief Story of Saint Gerard

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

I always love a good handkerchief story but this one especially struck me as Jeff and I are expecting our first child very soon. The famous handkerchief story goes like this:

While Gerard Majella, now the patron saint of mothers and children, was leaving the house of a family he had gone to visit, he dropped his handkerchief. A young woman retrieved it, but as she handed it to him, Gerard told her mysteriously, “Keep it. One day it will be of service to you.”

Although puzzled, the woman did keep it. And a few years later, she faced life threatening complications as she was about to give birth to her first child. She remembered the mysterious hanky and the promise, and asked that it be brought to her in her travail. She held it to her womb and immediately the pain ceased and she delivered a normal, healthy child.

The miraculous handkerchief was passed from mother to mother as they were about to give birth in the town of Olive to Citra. The first mother passed the precious relic on to her niece and on it went through the generations.

Some families took small pieces of it and only a small shred remained when Gerard was canonized on Dec. 11, 1904. It was enough, though, to pass its special graces on to other cloths touched to it.

No, Happy Hankies have not touched Saint Gerard’s scraps of cloth but I wanted to share the story and hope you found it as interesting as I did.

I found the story on www.ewtn.com and story was taken from the January 1997 issue of Our Sunday Visitor.

Wedding Handkerchiefs for Fall

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

Today is the first day of fall and so starts the fall wedding season! Nothing brings on tears like a romantic, fall wedding which is why Wedding Handkerchiefs are such an important wedding day accessory. Most brides give them to their bridal party and other special people at the rehearsal dinner so they will have them for the special day. Oddly, I have found that ladies love receiving a fun wedding handkerchief  but very often will treat themselves to one. I enjoy creating different hanky styles from fun & whimisical to classic & traditional so that the bride can select a wedding handkerchief specifically for a person. Whether it be to match their dress or their personality, they will carry the special Happy Hanky with them always!
